ENVIRONMENTAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF CADMIUM TELLURIDE SOLAR CELLS: Cd EMISSSIONS

چکیده

This analysis focuses on cadmium flows and atmospheric emissions in the life cycle of cadmium telluride solar cells. New data in the mining/smelting and utilization phases were used. Published estimates were cross-referenced with current environmental impact reports from metal smelting facilities, and experimental investigations were conducted to quantify emissions during fires. It was estimated that the total of atmospheric emissions of cadmium during all the phases of the modules’ life is about 0.02 g of Cd per GWh of electricity produced. These life-cycle emissions are two orders of magnitude lower than the controlled routine Cd emissions during the operation of modern coal-fired power plants.

Using atomistic simulations to model cadmium telluride thin film growth.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is an excellent material for low-cost, high efficiency thin film solar cells. It is important to conduct research on how defects are formed during the growth process, since defects lower the efficiency of solar cells. In this work we use computer simulation to predict the growth of a sputter deposited CdTe thin film. On-the-fly kinetic Monte Carlo technique is used to s...

Improving the performance of cadmium telluride solar cell (CdTe) with different buffer layers

In this paper, the performance of the buffer layer of Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) thin film solar cell was optimized using SCAPS software. At first, five different buffer layers including CdS, In2S3, ZnO, ZnSe and ZnS with variable thicknesses from 10 to 100 nm have been replaced in the structure of the solar cell and it has been observed. As the thickness of the buffer layer is increased, the eff...

Emissions from photovoltaic life cycles.

Photovoltaic (PV) technologies have shown remarkable progress recently in terms of annual production capacity and life cycle environmental performances, which necessitate timely updates of environmental indicators. Based on PV production data of 2004-2006, this study presents the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions, criteria pollutant emissions, and heavy metal emissions from four types of majo...

CdTe Photovoltaic Devices for Solar Cell Applications

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) has been recognized as a promising photovoltaic material for thin-film solar cells because of its near optimum bandgap of ~1.5 eV and high absorption coefficient. The energy gap is near optimum for a single junction solar cell and the high absorption coefficient allows films as thin as 2 μm to absorb more than 98% of the above-bandgap radiation. Cells with efficiencies ...
